Get to Know
An Ohio crafter from the time I could read instructions, I learned to crochet during my early teens and was "hooked"! My first projects were gifts for friends and family members and a granny square blanket for my college dorm room. When I married and started a family, I made numerous items for my own two sons and my friends' kids. When my husband and I moved our family from Ohio to North Dakota for a few years, a neighbor encouraged me to sell crocheted items at craft shows. I used crochet thread and fabric stiffener to make countless Christmas angels, snowflakes, bells, and church ornaments. After four years, my husband's career brought us back to Ohio. In our new church, I found a group of ladies and children who were interested in learning to crochet pieces of afghans to be joined together and given to homeless or hurting people through WARM UP AMERICA. We called ourselves the Servant Stitchers, and enjoyed Christian fellowship as we used up skein after skein of yarn. About five years ago, while our oldest son was in college and our youngest in high school, my husband and I moved again to a small town in Southeast Ohio, where I found a new use for my crocheting. Using instructions from Nancie Wiseman's book, CROCHET WITH WIRE, I began making jewelry pieces from copper wire and beads. I use the same hooks and techniques I've used for 35 years to make unique jewelry pieces. One of the most exciting aspects of this has been to make custom jewelry for proms, homecomings, and even weddings. Having a website is very helpful for my customers and a lot of fun for me. Participating in local craft shows gives me a chance to meet new people and see their eyes light up as they choose a special piece of jewelry for themselves or someone they love. God has blessed me in so many ways, and I chose to give back to Him with this hobby-turned- business. Therefore, all of the profits from Hook Bead & Wire Jewelry are sent to LIFE Outreach International to be used in their WATER FOR LIFE project. Water wells are being drilled in Africa and all over the world to provide clean, safe water for families in the name of Jesus Christ, and Hook Bead & Wire is a little part of it.
