Skills and Techniques

I tool my leather designs using little metal stamping tools of various shapes and sizes and a big hammer. Each line has to be cut into the leather using a swivel knife. Then the outline is done with a beveler, doing approximately 1/8" at a time. The deeper areas are shaped using a pear shader. Seeder tools are used for small round shapes. Veiners and camouflagers are used for the texture of vines and flowers. I have about 70 stamping tools all together. After tooling, I dye the leather using bottles of dye and a sponge. Holes are punched in by hand for the strap and button. Sewing holes are all punched by hand. The stitching is all done by hand, using needle and waxed thread. For Kindle covers and tablets, the item is held in a wooden stitching horse, which I sit on while I stitch. Each item takes hours to make and is all done by hand.

Get to Know

Welcome to Linda's Garden! I am a woman-owned small business, located in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest of the United States. I've been in business since 2000. I live with my wonderful husband, my two daughters, and my two black labs, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. We are so fortunate to live in such a gorgeous place. My grandmother taught me to knit and crochet when I was a wee thing of 6 years old. I've been addicted to yarn ever since. I began selling knitted headbands in the first grade (!) My mother taught me to sew, also at an early age. I wasn't allowed to run the sewing machine quite as young as I was let loose with a crochet hook, though! I first learned leathercraft when I was 12, and haven't looked back. I've been happily crafting for decades (no, I'm not telling how many). Now, I'm teaching my children, who also seem to have the crafting gene. I've been selling my wares since 2000 (if you don't count the headbands in the first grade!) All items are handmade by me in a non-smoking environment. I do have two great big lovable dogs, so not pet-free, though!
