Image Description
Looking for an out of the ordinary pair of handmade skull earrings? Then this pair of DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (Day of the Dead) earrings is for you! Created with hand carved bone skulls, turquoise and copper, they are a fun pair of earrings to wear and definitely will definitely kick up your jewelry collection a notch or two. These one of a kind (OOAK) beauties were carefully made by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs. The hand carved skulls used in the DIA DE LOS MUERTOS earrings are a rich amber color with darker highlights that gives and awesome aged look to the earrings. Since the skulls are individually hand carved , as you can see in the photos, they are not exactly alike. They do have an amazing amount of detail - you can actually see individual teeth! Copper daisy spacers frame the top and bottom of the skulls. To add swingy fun to the earrings, five turquoise rounds were individually wire-wrapped to a copper wire loop formed at the bottom of the skulls. Each piece of turquoise was individually wrapped on handmade (by me) copper head pins with a hand-hammered loop at the end. When worn, you will see quite a bit of movement in the turquoise dangles as your head turns and moves. The main body of the earrings was wire-wrapped to sterling silver earwires . A 3mm copper bead was added to each earwire as an enhancement and to tie the look of the metals together. Bone is said to bring good fortune, strength and wisdom. Turquoise is a stone of wholeness, promoting a sense of unity with all that surrounds us. It brings peace of mind, a soothing energy and healing of the spirit. Copper is said to allow the wearer to recognize the barriers which are in the path of personal development. Silver is a metal of love and healing. DIA DE LOS MUERTOS means "Day of the Dead", a ritual that has been practiced for at least 3,000 years. The Aztecs and other middle America indigenous peoples viewed death as the continuation of life and did not fear it. The Day of the Dead celebration honored those that has died. Today the Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico, and parts of the United States and Central America. It is celebrated on November 2 each year.
