Details

6 Organically Grown Black Oak Acorns
Quercus velutina
Blackened Oak, Pine Oak, Grey Oak, Yellow Oak, Quercitron, Yellowbark Oak, Smoothbark Oak

Description: Black Oak is a large rapid to growing tree of the Eastern United States found on a variety of soils in mixed forests, especially light sandy and gravelly upland ridges and slopes.
USDA Zones: 3a to 9b
Height: 25 to 75 feet
Width: 25 to 50 feet
Diameter: 1 to 3 feet
Leaf: Alternate, simple, 4 to 10 inches long, obovate or ovate in shape with 5 (mostly) to 7 bristle to tipped lobes; leaf shape is variable, with sun leaves having deep sinuses and shade leaves having very shallow sinuses, lustrous shiny green above, paler with a scruffy pubescence and axillary tufts below.
Flower: Monecious. Male and female flowers appear on the same tree, but separately, as the leaves start to unfold. Male flowers appear as drooping clusters (catkins) and females in clusters of 1 to 4. Acorns are either single or born in pairs, are oval, and up to 0.75 inch long.
Fruit: Ovoid Acorns; The nut has vertical lines that look like fine pin stripes running the length of the nut. Approximately 0.25 to 0.333 of the nut is enclosed by the cup, which is dull brown and hairy, with a small fringe at the bottom where the scales are not pressed up against the nut. The acorn is bitter, but a good food source for many songbirds, game birds, mice, raccoon, and deer. Acorns are produced once every two years.
Twig: Stout and red to brown to gray to green, usually glabrous but rapidly growing twigs may be hairy; buds are very large (0.25 to 0.50 inch long), buff to colored, fuzzy, pointed and distinctly angular.
Bark: At first gray and smooth, becoming thick and very rough, nearly black and deeply furrowed vertically with horizontal breaks. The inner bark is yellow to orange and very bitter tasting.
Form: A medium sized tree to 80 feet with an irregular crown and a tapering, somewhat limby bole.
Habitat: Very adaptable, usually found in alluvial bottom land, prefers limestone soils, tolerates dry clay soil, very tolerant of urban conditions, likes full sun.
Range: Extends from southwestern Maine west to New York, Ohio, southern Michigan, and Indiana; south to southern Illinois, southeastern Missouri, and central Mississippi; east to southern Alabama and southwestern Georgia; and north along the western edge of the Coastal Plain to Virginia.
Discussion: A common, widespread, and often misidentified overstory tree. Leaves are highly variable and can resemble those of many other species, especially N. Red Oak (shade leaves) and S. Red Oak (sun leaves). At left is a typical shade leaf. Sun leaves are quite different, very deeply lobed. Black Oak leaves can be told from those of other species by their pubescence beneath that easily rubs off. N. Red has pubescence only in vein axils and S. Red has dense pubescence that doesnt rub off easily. The bark is rough and blackish, without the white vertical stripes of smoother bark found in N. Red Oak and Shumard Oak. The species name velutina is a reference to the underside of the leaves of black oak, which are covered with fine hairs. The yellowish to orange inner bark is bitter tasting. Native Americans used black oak to treat a wide variety of ailments including indigestion, chills, fevers, respiratory problems, sore eyes, and more. It was also used as an antiseptic and an emetic (to induce vomiting).
Specifics about This Black Oak: Grown on our family farm, never had chemicals used around it. The seed is NOT Certified Organic, however, it is grown in organic soil on a certified Organic Farm.
Important Notes: All acorns are decupped prior to storage to reduce the chance of fungal infection. Oaks readily germinate, if you have received your oaks and they are starting to germinate, either plant immediately, or place in a cool (34 to 42`F location, the standard household refrigerator is perfect; until ready to start.)
