About the Pendant:
A friend of mine asked me to design something for her sister who has been battling breast cancer. She told me her sister has been through surgery, chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery and that she has been determined to beat this.
I began the creative process thinking of the qualities that define a person who is confronted with a life threatening struggle and the words strength, courage and determination kept returning to my mind.
I began doing some searching to find symbols that would embody those qualities. In my search, I came across the symbolic meaning of the circle, the new moon, and the color pink. The new moon symbolizes power and the positive transformation of life; the circle symbolizes the determination for continuous improvement and the color pink symbolizes femininity.
I began the design with a .999 fine silver circular disk and then hand-engraved the new moon over and on the outside circumference of the circle, one superimposed over the other. I chose a soft pink rose quartz, not only for its color but, because quartz is considered a healing stone and set it in a fine silver bezel at the top of the disk. The engraved crescent of the new moon has been burnished to highlight the texture while the body of the circle has been given a brushed matte textured surface for contrast. The disk has been slightly domed to add depth and the silver has been antiqued to highlight the various elements. The bail for this pendant is on the back, hidden from view, to support the design as if anchored in the sky. The meaning of each element of the pendant is engraved on the back of the pendant. The pendant hangs from an 18ââ,¬Â .925 sterling silver matte finish snake chain with a lobster claw clasp. The name of the recipient and the date can be engraved on the back.
To me, this design embodies the feminine spirit of strength and courage that empowers us to positively transform ourselves to meet our challenges, determined to improve our chances to succeed no matter what life throws our way. In essence, this symbolizes all women and our strength and courage as we go through life.
