Circular Shawl of Rope and Wood
Details
WOW this one was tuff to make. Maybe not as hard as it looks, but, still hard. You can clearly see that the central flower medallion lies flat. Well. It doesn't seem to while you're making it. The excellent book I took it from, by Kristen Omdahl, has those new stitch diagrams so I could SEE I was doing it right. That was pretty sweet.
I really didn't want the ending to be the same as in the book, but I needed something to provide weight to it so it would really hang well. There are around 450 plain natural wood beads worked into the webbing, and they provide the heft.
The yarn is a Russian import, 100% cotton, the name is "Magnolia". ( My son loves to delve into languages and linguistics. I thank him for this information, as the yarn label is in Cyrillic.) I don't recommend machine washing, however, because the shawl could become very tangled with itself. I WOULD recommend pulling it flat while drying it, as I think over time and a few washings, it will grow yet a bit longer.
There are a bunches of cool ways to wear this... That new mannequin is not as bendy as you or I and I only managed to show two ways. You could just put your arms thru two comfortable openings, and it would drape around your calves, I think.
The shawl is 50" in diameter. It took just as long or longer than an afghan to make, and following the threads around as you must was not easy. Fortunately for me, i have been crocheting long enough that I find my mistakes almost as soon as I make them, and there were no major uncorrected errors for pulling.
This is a super fun shawl to wear... and quite adaptable.
Comes with care, size, and name tags, with my label sewn in where it hopefully won't show much.
