Melampodium Gold, lknown as medallion flower (30) annual flowers Seeds

Melampodium (Melampodium Paludosum Golden Yellow) Annual flowers seeds

Melampodium, also known as medallion flower, is a newly popular garden flower valued for its tolerance of hot, dry conditions and resistance to pests and disease. This annual flower requires only the most basic care to thrive during the summer months and is considered one of the easiest flowers to grow. Melampodium plants reach up to 24 inches in height, depending on the cultivar, and produce yellow, daisy-like flowers in abundance. The plant's attractive green foliage is a wonderful backdrop to the small, dainty blooms that appear in early summer and last until the first frost. Grow melampodium from seed or container-grown plants from your local nursery, if you can find them.

Hardiness Zones: Melampodium plants are grown in zones 3 through 10. Considered summer annuals, they are killed by the first frost.

Growing Difficulty: Very easy

What You Need:
Garden tiller
Organic mulch
How to Grow Melampodium Plants:
Sow melampodium seed directly in the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Choose a planting site that receives full sun and has average, very well-drained soil. Prepare the site by cultivating with a garden tiller to a depth of 6 inches, but do not amend with organic material.
Space seeds 7 to 10 inches apart, planting at a depth of about ½ inch. Water immediately after planting to compact the soil and initiate growth. Germination occurs in about 7 days. Alternatively, plant nursery-grown plants about 12 inches apart in the prepared garden bed.

Water melampodium plants about once per week until well established, and then reduce the frequency of watering to times of drought only. Melampodium thrives in hot, dry conditions and requires water only if two weeks have passed without rain or if plants begin to wilt.
Apply a 2-inch layer of organic mulch over the soil surrounding melampodium plants once they've become established. This will help conserve moisture and prevent the need for much supplemental watering. Shredded bark is best, although leaves or grass clippings will work.
Tips for Growing Melampodium:

No supplemental fertilization is required for melampodium plants, as excess fertilizer causes the plants to grow too long and flop over.
Melampodium seed may be started indoors about eight weeks before the final frost of winter for earlier blooms. Grow under lights at 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and transplant into the garden when threat of frost has passed.

Melampodium plants self-seed abundantly and new seedlings will appear all throughout the growing season. Don't worry too much about invasiveness, as the plants will all die back after the first frost. Just remember to provide plenty of room for the explosion of growth during summer.

Landscape Uses:
Melampodium is commonly used as a replacement for marigold, since it is not susceptible to disease and requires no deadheading.Melampodium (Melampodium Paludosum Golden Yellow)
Melampodium plant is well-suited for container growing, particularly in hot climates.
Use melampodium plants in sunny borders, edge plantings and window boxes for a splash of bright color.
