Vintage Chinese Rare Brown Cinnabar Bead Necklace,Carved Serpentine Kylin Pendant, Red Tigereye, Red Jasper

Vintage AAA grade Red Tigereye,Vintage Chinese Chocolate Brown Cinnabar, Vintage Red Jasper, Marble, Vintage Chinese Hand Carved Chocolate Brown Serpentine Kylin Pendant

Warm earthy tones have been combined in this approximately 27" long hand knotted necklace which consists of both vintage stone beads and vintage rare chocolate brown Chinese cinnabar - both from the 1980s.

► All the stone beads which I use were personally selected by me in Hong Kong during the 1970s-1980s when the standards of cutting were meticulous. Nowadays, stone beads are being cut and imported from India where the labor is cheap, the beads are not always perfectly round, nor do they have an even polish and many times they are not even drilled all the way through .
A vintage1970s hand carved dark brown serpentine pendant depicting a Kylin hangs beneath this museum quality necklace. This one of a kind pendant measures approximately 2 3/8" in diameter and is carved on both sides .

Total length of this necklace with the pendant is approximately 29" - the silk cord dark has been dyed a dark brown to blend with all the beads and compliment the pendant.
► The Kylin is a Chinese mythical beast who symbolizes good fortune and who appeared only when a benevolent emperor occupied the throne. Generally, it had the head of a sheep, the body of a deer, the feet of a horse, the claws of a wolf and the tail of an ox. It could have one horn or a pair of horns on its head. In the minds of the ancients, the Kylin was a lucky animal, and one of the four magic animals (the other three being the dragon, the phoenix and the tortoise). The Kylin was said to have the ability to produce lucky signs, communicate with Heaven, spread moral ethics, convey benevolence, all the while looking elegant and graceful. It was also a symbol of longevity, because it could live from 1000 to 3000 years and it was also believed to be particularly fond of benign emperors.

As Chinese Folklore has it , before Confucius was born, a Kylin appeared in Jueli Village, near Qufu, capital of the State of Lu ( in present-day Shangdong Province), and spit from its mouth a book made of jade. Knowing it was a good omen, Confucius' mother Yan Zhengzai tied a silk thread around the horn of the Kylin. The Kylin stayed the night, and left the following day.
Shortly afterwards, Confucius was born. Since then, the image of Kylin was regarded as a symbol of a good marriage, an easy childbirth, and a lucky child.

Later, the 'Child-delivering Kylin' became a popular theme for paintings , carvings and even embroideries . Gold or silver neckbands, hat decorations, bibs, and pictures with image of the Kylin were given as gifts to a relative or friend who had just given birth to a child. In some areas of China according to legend, a bride would wear a bib with the image of the Kylin at her wedding ceremony, in hopes of bearing a child soon.◀
►Genuine cinnabar beads are made from a lacquer which is derived from a tree sap found in China. The tree is tapped like a maple and the resulting gum is purified by heating and then made into lacquer by adding a solvent. This resulting lacquer is slowly added in many layers over a wood base. The lacquer can be colored in various hues including black, red, green, yellow and brown although most people are only aware of the red cinnabar.

Many people sell 'cinnabar' which is made from plastic so be sure of what you are purchasing. All the cinnabar I use in my designs are indeed vintage cinnabar beads that we personally selected and purchased in Hong Kong during the late 1970s - 1980s. These many layers of lacquer are then hand carved with intricate designs representing various symbols or images found in nature such as birds and flowers.

There are also accents or taupe brown marble beads to add another texture and frame the 10mm red jasper stone beads.

The red tigereye is such a luscious shade of reddish brown - the beautiful shimmering ( eye effect ) in tigereye is caused by chatoyancy which is reflections of light from fibers . In tigereye the fibers are asbestos which have been completely silicified ( replaced by silica ).
These gorgeous AAA grade tigereye beads are in both a 10mm and a 12mm size ( there are 25mm to the inch ) and the unique and quite rare vintage Chinese brown cinnabar are approximately 3/4" in diameter!

This necklace actually sold in the Sackler Gallery's museum shop in Washington, D.C. during the 1980s ( the Smithsonian's Asian art museum )

Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.
