Vintage Japanese Red Black Millefiori Glass Bead Earrings,German Resin
Vintage Japanese RARE Millefiori Black Red Glass Beads, Vintage West German Jet Black Etched Resin Ornate Flower Beads, Vintage West German Black Pressed Glass Flower Beads, Handmade Bali 24K gold vermeil ear wires, Handmade Bali 24k gold vermeil flower medallion bead
Dramatic and elegant looking long dangle earrings feature 3 different vintage beads - 2 from Germany and 1 from Japan- and handmade Bali 24k gold vermeil findings.
Rare Japanese millefiori glass beads are a deep red with black 'flowers' and each bead is approximately 1/4" in diameter with the top bead being a bit smaller. They are from the 1970s and unlike any I've ever seen since originally finding them in the late 1970s .
Millefiori' literally means “thousand flowers”. To make such beads, thin rods of different colors of glass are bundled together, with the ends of the rods forming a design, such as flowers. The bundle is fused together, then cross section slices are cut off, jelly-roll fashion. These slices are applied and melted over a glass core. The resulting bead has a three dimensional look filled with flowers or other patterns.
An ornate Bali 24k gold vermeil flower medallion bead separates these vintage millefiori glass beads as does a black vintage German 1950s pressed glass flower bead which hugs the top red glass bead.
➤ The way that this type of pressed glass bead was made is fascinating! The glass that was going to be used was first heated on a mandrel (rod) in much the same way that lamp work beads are made today.
A 'press' which almost resembled tongs used to cook with, was then wrapped around the molten glass to form the desired shape. Many times, VERY detailed impressions were on the ends of these tongs that were used in these vintage West German ' pressed' glass beads so that the final bead looked almost as if it were 'etched' or 'carved'.
◉ As a point of interest : The German glass bead industry began in 1948 when German glass makers were evicted from Czechoslovakia because of their German surnames. Of the two thousand or so workers and owners evicted- only about 2 or 3 were still making hand pressed glass in the 70's.
All the vintage German glass beads that I use in my work is from this earliest time period ( the 1950s ) and not the 1970s and later.
The incredible focal bead is the bottom jet black etched flower bead of plastic resin and made in German over 40 years ago. The ornateness of these beads is incredible as you can see in the photos. These beads are approximately 1/2" in diameter.
Total length of these earrings is approximately 2 3/4" and they have been finished on handmade Bali 24k gold vermeil french ear wires.
They will arrive gift wrapped in a little box tied with a pretty ribbon all ready for gift giving.
