Vintage ZIRCON Matched pair Antique Cut TW 5.66cts fgs103
A lovely matched pair of vintage faceted antique cut cognac yellow zircons weighing a total of 5.66 carats and each with dimensions 9 x 7 x 4.5 mm, calibrated for easy setting. The colors of these stone are subtle and hard to reproduce in photos, a soft dark cognac hue (not brown) with highlights of golden yellow. The cutting is superb, and the stones are extremely brilliant with no window that would allow light to leak out the back. They also display fire, a strong color play caused by dispersion of light.
There is much confusion in the marketplace about zircon, which is a mineral that has been known and used as a gem for centuries (the old name was "hyacinth"), and is also the birthstone for December. Zirconia, by contrast, is a synthetic material manufactured in prodigious quantities and used worldwide as a diamond simulant. Naturally occurring gem zircon is quite rare, whereas manufactured zirconia is abundant and very inexpensive.?
Zircon occurs in a huge range of colors. It occurs in rocks that often contain uranium minerals, and can trap microscopic amounts of uranium and other radioactive elements in its crystal structure. Exposure to this internal radiation over millennia may eventually destroy the crystallinity of the structure, a process called "metamictization". "High zircon" is crystalline, and "low zircon" is metamict. High zircon displays "fire", which is a play of color created when white light passing through the material is spread out into its component rainbow hues. Diamond is the best known example of a highly dispersive gem, but other stones, such as sphene, demantoid garnet and zircon, also display this property.
It was discovered centuries ago that gentle heating (even over a candle flame) can irreversibly and permanently change the color of some zircons. All blue zircons owe their color to this process, since naturally occurring blue zircon does not exist. A large percentage of zircon is brownish or yellowish, and in the last few years the jewelry trade has started to appreciate this range of colors for its own merits.
These lovely oval cut zircons are a perfect example of a hue that is quickly rising in popularity. We guarantee the material to be vintage zircon that was produced in the 1970s or earlier, and that Joel had recut for brilliancy in Bangkok in the late 1970s. The shipping cost includes insurance.
One of the photographs shows several books that Joel has written. The Color Encyclopedia of Gemstones has for more than 30 years been the world's most authoritative source of information on (and pictures of) gemstones, including many of the rare gems, such as andalusite, and all the colors of spinel. Books not included in purchase!

Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.
Nice beads!! Super fast thanks a lot!!!
I have dreamed of having a necklace such as the jade one. But the red one. That was a surprise. Both are beautiful. Thank you! Best, Jane
Lovely color;!interesting stones.
When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
