retro 1980's sodalite chips blue bugle beads graduated hoop earrings
Way back when I was a starry-eyed hippie girl, I discovered the joy of handmade earrings -- and never looked back. Brimming with creativity but short of money, I made earrings out of whatever beads and supplies I could find.
A few months ago, a friend decided she was done with beading, and asked whether I'd like her old supplies. This, for the woman (me) who has a dedicated bead room with wall-to-wall and almost-to-ceiling beads, was an immediate YES!
What I got were boxes of unsorted (ACK -- no wonder my friend gave up beading!) small glass beads and gemstone chips.
My first thought was -- I haven't worked with most of these materials since the 1980's, or before. Inexpensive and labor-intensive, I stopped using those beads because I never got paid for all the time I put in.
Then I thought -- what would the hippie girl do?
She certainly would never have thrown away boxes of perfectly good beads. And she would have done something fun.
I tried to remember what I was into back then. Repeating mathematical patterns. Mobiles.
And in that instant, I knew exactly what I'd do with the beads.
Concentric graduated oval hoops are made from denim-navy sodalite chips and pale sapphire (we used to call it "ice blue") glass bugle beads. The hoops are strung on wire and have a slight side-to-side movement, but not full rotation as a mobile would. (In order to achieve rotation, I'd have to stack the hoops on a center beaded shaft -- which I can do if you like. The earrings would be slightly longer.)
I added a 3/4" (20mm) dumortierite elongated diamond (from my current bead stash!) to balance the design.
From the top of the surgical steel hypo-allergenic ear wires, these fun retro earrings are 4-1/8" (10.2cm) long. They can be changed to clip or screw back findings for non-pierced ears.
Goes with all your basic denim. Even your non-basic denim, and your non-denim.
To truly appreciate where you are now, you have to remember where you came from. My starry-eyed hippie girl is never far away.

The earrings are even prettier in person than on the web. I've gotten lots of compliments about them.
