Hand crafted West African recycled glass krobo powder glass beads has been documented to date from as early as the 1920s. Most of the powder glass beads produced today is made by Ashanti and Krobo village people.
The village craftsmen start with the bead making process using clay that is locally dug and make vertical molds. Colored glass, cold cream bottles and different types of glass scraps are pulverized into fine powder; usually a mortar and pestle are used, or pounded with a small stone while the glass lays in bags resting on a large rock.
The powder glass goes through a wire mesh, dye colorant is added and a cassava stalk is inserted in the molds center, when the mold is fired the stalk burns out and a hole in the bead is formed.
The powder is poured into handcrafted molds in various shapes and sizes each one coated in white clay called, Kaolin.
The glass power is poured into the molds very carefully by a skilled artisan who uses a tin can made into a funnel to make his design and requires the most skill to make the best bead.
The powdered beads are fired for 20 min or up to 45 minutes in a mud kiln at high temperatures of 600-850° c.
When the beads are ready to be taken out of the firing kiln, they are shaped using two long metal pins.
