Handcrafted Wire Wrapped African Krobo Jumbo size glass Ring fits 7.5
Recycled Round Glass Bead Measures 20 mm Diameter x 14 mm Depth
Bold, Chunky, Statement Ring-
This is a Beautiful Aqua Swirl Translucent Jumbo size, Recycled Glass Bead from West Africa, Handcrafted into a Wire Wrapped One of a Kind ring, Handmade in the USA.
The Rose Gold wire is used to make the ring band, by wrapping the wire around a ring mandrel twice with the thicker wire, a thinner wire was used to wire wrap the jumbo bead to the ring band. The thick wire is hand forged, slightly hammered with a rubber mallet adding some texture and extra strength to the ring band.
Tiny Krobo Style Heishi beads sized approximately, 3mm x 4mm to 5mm x 5mm surround the larger aqua bead in a unique swirl of color; wire wrapped in a thinner gauge of Rose Gold wire.
The process of recycling glass and making this style of translucent beads is the similar to making the writing style beads, called Krobo Powder beads, but the glass doesn't need to be pounded into a powder, small particles of glass are inserted directly into the molds. Also they do not use the stalks of the cassava stalk to create the hole; the holes on the translucent beads must be punched by hand.
West African recycled krobo powder glass beads have been documented as far back and as early as the 1920s. Todays recycled powder glass beads are produced by the Krobo village people and made by Ashanti.
The Krobo Style Heishi Beads made by talented village craftsmen start the bead making process by using clay, dugged locally to make molds that are shaped vertical. They use different types of glass to be used as scraps and are pulverized to a very fine powder. The pulverized powder method is done using a mortar and pestle or pounded with a small stone while the glass scraps are in a bag resting on a larger rock, ready to get pounded, after is screen through a mesh.
The powder is poured into handcrafted molds that are various shapes and size molds each one coated in white clay called, Kaolin. The glass power is poured into the molds very carefully by skilled artisans.
The powdered beads are fired for 20 min or up to 45 minutes in a mud kiln at high temperatures of 600-850° c.
When the beads are ready to be taken out of the firing kiln, they are shaped using two long metal pins. If you would like to read more about the process, you can check out this website where I bought these beads at.
