Sterling silver Little Bell earrings
How they are made:
This earring starts out with two pieces of sterling silver the size of a United States quarter cut out of sterling silver sheet of 24 gauge. It is then hammered in a dapping block from a large half sphere to another smaller one and another smaller one, each time the piece of silver is getting more and more rounded.
Once it reaches the desired shape, a hole is drilled in the center and it is polished. 20 gauge sterling silver wire is used to make a connector to go through the hole. This will connect to the ear wire and also attach to the 'ringer'. The ringer is a piece of sterling silver tubing that is drilled and soldered to the connector with a hand made jump ring.
Next, the ear wire is fabricated. This starts with a piece of 20 gauge wire usually about 2" long. The wire is heated red hot on one end just until a molten ball forms on the end, then it is quenched in water and pickled.
The circle is formed with round nosed pliers and then the shaping of it is done on a mandrel. The end of the wire is smoothed using a cup bur so there are no sharp edges and then the end of the wire is given a small bend.
The bell is soldered on and then the earring is tumbled to 'work harden' it and give it its final finish.
This earring does make a delicate ringing noise.
From the top of the connector to the bottom of the ringer is approximately 1 ½ inches.
