Sterling silver double frog charm earrings
How they are made:
The circle is 20 gauge sterling silver wire that is formed and before being soldered closed, the large frog is put on.
Next, the ear wire is fabricated. This starts with a piece of 20 gauge wire usually about 2" long. The wire is heated red hot on one end just until a molten ball forms on the end, then it is quenched in water and pickled.
The circle is formed with round nosed pliers and then the shaping of it is done on a mandrel. The end of the wire is smoothed using a cup bur so there are no sharp edges and then the end of the wire is given a small bend.
Next, before soldering the ring on, a tiny piece of silver wire is soldered in the small circle of the ear wire. The small ring goes above the wire and the charm goes below so can move independently of each other.
The earring is then tumbled to 'work harden' it and give it its final finish.
From the top of the small circle to the bottom of the frog is approximately 2 ¼ inches.
A single earring weighs approximately 5.2 grams. A United States nickel weighs approximately 5 grams.
