VINTAGE YELLOW SAPPHIRE Faceted Gem oval cut 1.63 cts FG70
Vintage yellow sapphire, oval cut, weighing 1.63 carats and with dimensions 8.0 x 6.2 x 4.0 mm. This is a natural color, unheated stone from Sri Lanka, and has been recut for brilliancy and good proportions. There are a few small inclusions (which help identify it as a natural gem) but these are virtually invisible to the unaided eye, hidden by the extreme brilliancy of the stone.
Sapphire is the birthstone for September. Sapphire and ruby are both color varieties of the mineral corundum (aluminum oxide), which is colorless when pure. Traces of chemical impurities create a huge range of hues, spanning all the colors of the rainbow as well as many intermediate shades. The red or pinkish-red variety of corundum has a special name: ruby. ALL OTHER colors are called sapphire. The word sapphire derives from the Latin "sapphirus", which means "blue", and so for centuries it was assumed that all sapphires are blue. In recent years all the other colors have become recognized, and available, in the commercial gemstone marketplace, and now "rainbow suites" of sapphires, set in bracelets and rings, have become commonplace in jewelry stores.
Ruby is corundum colored by a trace of chromium. In sapphire, manganese produces pink shades, and the blue color is caused by a combination of iron and titanium. Iron alone results in shades of yellow and green. Many sapphires contain excess titanium, which appears in the form of included tiny needles of titanium oxide (rutile) and is called "silk". (Rutile in larger crystals also occurs in quartz, where it creates amazing bursts and sprays of golden needles).
The "precious" stones are generally said to be diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald (opal and pearl are sometimes included). The value of these gems is a function of size, color and clarity, with "pure" colors being the most desirable. Over the past few years all the colors of sapphire have become increasingly popular and have risen dramatically in price. Natural (unheated) yellow sapphires are now quite rare and in great demand.
The price is for the one natural color yellow sapphire, that we guarantee to be from Sri Lanka and untreated. The shipping cost includes insurance within the U.S.
One of the photographs shows several books that Joel has written. The Color Encyclopedia of Gemstones has for more than 30 years been the world's most authoritative source of information on (and pictures of) gemstones, including many of the rare gems, such as andalusite, and all the colors of spinel. Our beads vary so much in weight that it is impossible for us to apply a single add-on charge for multiple product orders. We will continue to refund to customers any amount that greatly exceeds our actual cost of shipping and handling.
ORDERS OUTSIDE USA: International First Class rates are now crazy: $16.50 for any package weighing from 1-5 ounces. Even an order for 2-3 small bead items may cost $16.50 or more, depending on the type of material (stone versus resin, for example). We apologize in advance if we have to adjust the postage cost of an order that has been placed. We will understand if an order is rescinded when the postage cost is too high relative to the product value.
All international orders have contents described as "loose beads" and are flagged as "commercial samples" or " gift" if you prefer to make your life easier when receiving your beads. If you'd like us to mark your order as " gift" instead please let us know!
All our beads are inspected one by one before being shipped. They are individually wrapped to protect them and then put in little plastic ziploc bags.

Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.
Nice beads!! Super fast thanks a lot!!!
I have dreamed of having a necklace such as the jade one. But the red one. That was a surprise. Both are beautiful. Thank you! Best, Jane
Lovely color;!interesting stones.
When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
