VINTAGE Photographic MINERAL Specimen Gem PRINTS Series of 4 1970

Vintage mineral frame-able print collection "Picture Your Wall" - a set of four 8" x 10" prints by my husband that won the Tucson Gem and Mineral show slide competition during the early 1970's. These are ' four color ' prints and over 40 years old.

From 1970 to 1973 my husband Joel worked as a research scientist and curator at the world famous Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., in the Dept. of Mineral Sciences. He had full access to the world's finest collection of gems and minerals (and even had the Hope Diamond around his neck on 2 occasions!). Joel also was instrumental in the launch of the Mineralogical Record, a magazine for mineral enthusiasts (now in its 41st year of publication) that revolutionized the field of mineral photography. The "Record" created a contest to attract photographers and have them submit their best mineral pictures for use by the magazine. The winning photo (selected by majority vote at the world's largest gem and mineral event, the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, which takes place every February) would later appear as a magazine cover.

Joel had developed unique lighting techniques for mineral photography, and won the Tucson Slide Competition in its first, second and third years. All of his photos were of Smithsonian specimens, generally of superb quality but small (1-2 inches). But one in particular was of a magnificent tourmaline specimen (still on display at the Museum) consisting of a twin column of foot-tall pink and green crystals from California that has come to be affectionately known as "the steamboat". The lighting and photography of this incredible specimen took an entire day, but the result was (and remains) the finest picture ever taken of "the steamboat".

Joel decided to make some of his photos available to subscribers of the Mineralogical Record as frame-able prints. In 1972 he assembled a set of four pictures and had these printed as 8x10 inch images, with great attention to detail and color quality, on heavy stock glossy paper. The "steamboat" tourmaline was one of these four, and this image was also produced simultaneously as an oversized 16 x 20" print. The set of photos was advertised at the time under the logo "Picture Your Wall", with the first word having a double meaning.

A few sets of these incredible prints are still available and in mint condition even after nearly 40 years. The images are of rhodochrosite (Germany), wulfenite (Mexico), cinnabar (China) and tourmaline (California).
They are available as individual 8 x 10" prints or as a set of four, and the tourmaline is also available in 16 x 20" size. These unique photos set a global standard for mineral photography four decades ago, and their quality has never been surpassed.

**Price is for one (1) of each of these different 8" x 10" non matted prints which are signed on the back by Joel.
Prints will arrive in cardboard reinforced envelope for protection. These prints are excellent for framing! **

Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.

When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
