VINTAGE CHINESE SERPENTINE FOCAL BEAD Snakes 26grms pkg1 1977 CBS276
Vintage Chinese large hand carved serpentine focal barrel bead that we purchased during one of our first buying trips to China in the late 1970's! It depicts 2 snakes lying head to head with their tails wrapping around to the other side and is a somewhat flattened barrel shape as you can see in the photos. The year 1977 was a Year of the Snake and for those who are interested: Popular Chinese myth has it that the animal ruling the year in which a person is born tremendously influences his or her behavior and traits. People born under the sign of the SNAKE are thought to be dreamy, romantic, passionate, charming and well informed. They are also presumably logical, intellectual and idealistic and struggle to succeed in all that they do. They are extremely self-critical and often make their way to the top position. This is a large focal bead - measuring 42mm x 18mm - which is just about 1" wide and 1 5/8" long and weighs 26 grams! Because this is natural stone, each bead I have varies slightly in terms of the distribution of the mustard yellow and orange amber brown color. I only have a few left in my studio at this time. This would be an amazing focal bead and gorgeous when mixed with black onyx - please check out some of the vintage black onyx beads I also have listed in my shop under round gemstone beads.I 100% guarantee this to be a natural hand carved serpentine vintage bead from the 1970's and unlike anything you'll find nowadays anywhere! It has been slightly color-enhanced, typical for serpentine from this time period. You certainly will not find anything like this in your local bead shop or bead show!I sold many of these carved beads through the Smithsonian Institution's museum shop and mail order catalog during the 1980's and they were also featured in trunk shows at Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue during this same time period. You can read more about my career as a jewelry designer in my profile page!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: POSTAGE RATES HAVE RISEN DRAMATICALLY IN 2020
ORDERS INSIDE USA: A charge of $4.00 covers any first class shipment up to 15 ounces. Our beads vary so much in weight that it is impossible for us to apply a single add-on charge for multiple product orders. We will continue to refund to customers any amount that greatly exceeds our actual cost of shipping and handling.
ORDERS OUTSIDE USA: International First Class rates are now crazy: $16.50 for any package weighing from 1-5 ounces. Even an order for 2-3 small bead items may cost $16.50 or more, depending on the type of material (stone versus resin, for example). We apologize in advance if we have to adjust the postage cost of an order that has been placed. We will understand if an order is rescinded when the postage cost is too high relative to the product value.
All international orders have contents described as "loose beads" and are flagged as "commercial samples" or " gift" if you prefer to make your life easier when receiving your beads. If you'd like us to mark your order as " gift" instead please let us know!
All our beads are inspected one by one before being shipped. They are individually wrapped to protect them and then put in little plastic ziploc bags.
All vintage beaded jewelry is either shipped in a little gift box tied with a ribbon or in a vintage Chinese embroidered silk purse.

Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.
Nice beads!! Super fast thanks a lot!!!
I have dreamed of having a necklace such as the jade one. But the red one. That was a surprise. Both are beautiful. Thank you! Best, Jane
Lovely color;!interesting stones.
When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
