Wine Carafe and cups
Wheel thrown and wood fire wine carafe with 4 matching cups.
Decanter 10"x 7" and each cup 3"x3"
These pieces were fired in an Anagama Wood kiln in Madrid, NM. The firing process involves 10 to 12 artists and takes 4 weekends. The first weekend we need to prepare the wood, about 5 to 6 cords. The second weekend we load the kiln. The 3rd weekend the kiln is fired. We start around noon on Thursday and go straight through to Midnight Sunday night. We unload the kiln after a week of cooling on the 4th weekend.
This fire process provides a unique finish. The ash is blown through the kiln with the flames and deposits on the pots. As the kiln heats up, the ash will melt and form a glaze. The flames will also "flash" the clay creating interesting patterns on the clay. I leave most of my pots exposed on the exterior (free of glaze) to fully take advantage of the process that happens in the kiln. The finished product is also still a fully functional and food safe piece of pottery and each piece is a unique piece of art.
