Handmade Phoenix Ballpoint in Black Limba with Chrome hardware
This is a Phoenix ballpoint pen turned out of Black Limba and assembled with chrome hardware. This pen looks like it is a click pen, but it is actually a single twist mechanism. It's about 5-1/2 inches long and weighs a bit less than 2 ounces and uses a Parker refill
There are three colors of limba. A "normal" tree has off-white sapwood and is sometimes yellowish or even pale brown and the heartwood is similarly colored and not clearly differentiated from the sapwood. These two types of limba and are virtually indistinguishable although sometimes the heartwood will be darker brown. The sapwood and heartwood of this version is white limba. The third limba, which is the somewhat more rare heartwood, has varying degrees of irregular black streaking, that can create some beautiful patterns. This is called "black limba". There is no such thing as a white or black limba tree. Black limba is about the same as mahogany in weight, hardness and texture. The pores are small enough that one can finish the wood without filling it. I like this wood and wouldn't hesitate to substitute it for mahogany.
A bit about of the process of creating these pens: I start with a hand-selected bit of wood and the bits that make up the mechanism of the pen. I then cut the wood to length and drill holes to make room for the mechanism. I then put the blank on the lathe and spend some time working the wood to be the proper diameter to match the mechanism. Sand paper is applied, through a number of grits, to get a nice, smooth surface. Several coats of finish are applied and buffed. The wood and mechanism are then combined to create a fabulous writing instrument.
